Piazza del Popolo
At the heart of the historical city centre and way of life, it is considered to be one of the most beautiful town squares in Italy due to its buildings and size.
The Cathedral
Built in the 11th century on the remains of a prior church and dedicated to St. Mary Assumption, it is characterized by three rose windows, the most beautiful of which is the central one that dates back to around 1520. The bell tower is in typical Romanesque style and dates back to the 12th century.
Church of Saint Fortunato
In gothic style, building work began in 1292 and terminated during the second half of the 15th century. It is dedicated to the city’s patron saint. The façade by Giovanni Santuccio da Fiorenzuola di Spoleto is visibly unfinished. There is one central and two lateral portals and the bell tower which dates back to 1460 is today accessible. From the top there is a splendid 360° view of the town and the surrounding valley.
Church of Santa Maria della Consolazione
Building work began in 1508 and terminated in 1606. The design is attributed to Bramante and other artists including among others;Antonio da Sangallo, Baldassare Peruzzi, l’Alessi, Il Vignola and Ippolito Scalza.
