The legend of Nymph Agilla<\/strong> and Prince Trasimeno<\/strong> is purely Umbrian and extremely\u00a0romantic, set at the Trasimeno Lake<\/strong> and which, according to tradition, gave this beautiful\u00a0Umbrian body of water its name.<\/p>\n

It recounts the love story<\/strong> between Agilla, a lake nymph, and Prince Trasimeno, the son of the\u00a0Etruscan King Tyrrhenus.<\/p>\n

Legend has it that Trasimeno was travelling through central Italy\u00a0when he came across the lake and, since it was a very hot day, he decided to go for a dip.\u00a0He\u00a0was spotted by the nymph who couldn’t help but notice his beauty, and wanted to meet him:\u00a0with her enchanting song she attracted him to the centre of the lake, to Polvese Island<\/strong>,\u00a0where the two met, they spent some time together and very quickly fell in love with each\u00a0other.<\/p>\n

Trasimeno then asked for her hand in marriage<\/strong>, but before being able to wed he had to\u00a0persuade his father who did not initially agree with the union. Once he had the blessing of\u00a0King Tyrrhenus<\/strong>, the two lovers could finally live out their wish, but the joy of the newlyweds\u00a0was short lived.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the legend, in fact, only the day after the wedding, Trasimeno\u00a0disappeared in the water<\/strong> of the lake.\u00a0In vain, Agilla searched for him for days on end,\u00a0searching the bottom, banks and surface of the large lake.\u00a0Because of the great fatigue and pain, Agilla ended up dying.<\/p>\n

From that moment on, according to tradition, when the wind blows<\/strong> over the lake and through
\nthe branches of the surrounding trees, one can hear sighing: this is Agilla crying<\/strong>, still
\ninconsolable for the loss of her betrothed. And when waves cut through the wake of a boat,
\nthey say it is the nymph still looking for Trasimeno and hoping he is one that boat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
