{"id":2023,"date":"2019-06-08T16:33:23","date_gmt":"2019-06-08T14:33:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fontecesia.it\/?p=2023"},"modified":"2019-06-08T16:33:23","modified_gmt":"2019-06-08T14:33:23","slug":"the-wines-of-todi-the-best-to-drink-in-the-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fontecesia.it\/en\/enogastronomy-umbria\/the-wines-of-todi-the-best-to-drink-in-the-city\/","title":{"rendered":"The wines of Todi: the best to &#8220;drink&#8221; in the city"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For people living in and visiting Umbria and Todi, there is an immense heritage of attractions to see and enjoy: <strong>oenology<\/strong> is a must of these activities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In fact the area is very rich in excellent\u00a0<strong>wines<\/strong>\u00a0with some being especially fine and renowned and others belonging to niche markets, nevertheless always very high quality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When describing the first group it is a must to mention the two <strong>DOCGs<\/strong>: <strong>Sagrantino di Montefalco\u00a0and\u00a0Torgiano Rosso Riserva<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are then many <strong>DOCs<\/strong>, including\u00a0<strong>Todi DOC<\/strong>, which was established quite recently, in 2010.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Remaining in the area of Todi and Todi wines, there is another interesting new wine that has popped up in recent years: this would be <strong>Grero<\/strong>, and ancient native grape which, after extensive study and experimentation was added to the National register of wine grape varieties in 2011.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Todi DOC Grechetto<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0<strong>\u201cTodi\u201d controlled designation of origin<\/strong>\u00a0includes different types of varieties; Grechetto, also in its superior versions and passito; Sangiovese, also in its superior version; Merlot, also in its superior version.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The varieties for the production of DOC Todi must be produced in the areas of\u00a0<strong>Todi, Massa Martana, Monte Castello Vibio and Collazzone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Grechetto di Todi<\/strong> in particular, is certainly one of the best known and appreciated wines, and the name would make one believe that the variety comes from Greek origin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In actual fact this does not seem to be the case at all: even if some aromas and flavours are similar to those coming from the Eastern Mediterranean, according to some studies Grechetto umbro is genetically similar to Pignoletto dell\u2019Emilia Romagna\u00a0and\u00a0Ribolla Riminese.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Grero di Todi<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There has been a lot of speak about Grero di Todi over the past years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is a\u00a0<strong>red grape Grechetto variety<\/strong>\u00a0that had almost disappeared completely, but was part of a research project starting in 2005 which lead it to be added to the\u00a0<strong>National register of wine grape varieties<\/strong> in 2011. It is distinguished by limited production and moderate yield of the grapes, making this wine\u00a0an <strong>all-Umbrian delicacy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The rediscovery of Grero is mostly the merit of professor Alberto Palliotti from the Department of Agricultural, Dietary and Environmental Sciences at the University of Perugia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The parent variety plant of Grero was recovered from the <strong>Romazzano<\/strong> area of Todi: it was more than 120 years old with a trunk measuring 37 centimetres in diameter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This wine has a truly particular <strong>flavour<\/strong>: according to a research laboratory report of the Agri-Food technological park of Umbria, it features a ruby red colour with hints of purple. \u201cBalanced intensity of bitter, astringent and body, characteristics linked to the phenols &#8211; one can read on the identification data sheet &#8211; with an <strong>acid note<\/strong> which offers a certain <strong>freshness<\/strong> to the wine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>nose<\/strong> features complex sensations of <strong>spices and red berries<\/strong>, with quite marked sensations of dried fruit, liquorice and tobacco. The flavour of the Grero variety is balanced by its purity: undoubtedly full, slightly bitter and nevertheless distinguished by quite a balanced structure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>sensory properties<\/strong> make it a suitable grape variety for use in blends where it would surely provide remarkable intensity and brightness of colour, as well as a <strong>greater complexity<\/strong> of nose and taste;
