The Natural Pools “Le Mole” of Narni: a magical yet risky place

Just a few kilometres from Narni and Stifone, hidden along the canyons of the Nera River, there is a natural treasure: ‘Le Mole’ the natural pools of Narni. Clear waters surrounded by wild vegetation and rocks rising out of the pools. A magical place that, however, hides some dangers that need to be considered.

Getting to the natural pools “Le Mole”of Narni

It is not easy to get to Le Mole of Narni, because the road is not marked and there are no establishments along the route to ask for directions. Nevertheless, hikers are able to get there, equipped with patience and a good GPS navigator. Le Mole of Narni are along the Narni-Nera Montoro-Orte road and the address is Strada dello Stabilimento. From there you can continue on foot.

A magical yet dangerous place

The natural pools ‘Le Mole’ of Narni is a magical place to discover, and is well worth the effort. However, one must be aware of the hidden dangers of this apparent piece of heaven:

  • The danger of flooding
  • Swimming is not allowed

The danger of flooding

‘Le Mole’ of Narni are next to hydroelectric power plants which release water into the pools at regular intervals, raising the levels. In general, a siren sounds before the water is released, warning everyone in the area. However, these sirens are not guaranteed to go off because water is also released when the power plants stop due to a malfunction, and therefore without any warning.

No swimming allowed

There are no signs saying that swimming in these clear pools of water is not allowed, but the locals and frequenters of Le Mole of Narni are aware that the chemical factories next to the area may have polluted the water.

Regardless of the fact that swimming is not allowed, coming to this place to admire the surrounding nature and to sunbathe safely is highly recommended for people who want to seek out little-known and fascinating places of Umbria such as ‘Le Mole’ of Narni.
