Umbrian wineries offer a unique experience, where you can dive deep into the millenary tradition of winemaking and taste fine wines that capture the soul of this ancient land. From lake Trasimeno to Torgiano, from Orvieto to Todi, here are 10 of the most notable wineries in Umbria that welcome visitors as they travel through picturesque vineyards, tasting halls and also the chance to discover the passion and art that goes into each and every sip.

1 Viandante del Cielo cellar

24 hectares looking over the northern shores of lake Trasimeno: Viandante del Cielo is a modern and elegant cellar, under a single Italian proprietor, Skywalkers Winery, a company founded by director and producer George Lucas, a great wine connoisseur.

2 Lamborghini Estate in Umbria

Also in the Lake Trasimeno area, but on the southern shores, near the gorgeous medieval hamlet of Panicale. The estate was purchased by Ferruccio Lamborghini who, in the late 1960’s, decided to leave the family’s famous automotive business and get back to the origins: agriculture.

3 Tenuta Le Velette

This winery is located in Orvieto and produces high quality wines, including the famous Orvieto Classico. Visiting this vineyard allows you to discover its very ancient history, dating as far back as the Etruscans and  their ability to use the volcanic soil to dig deep cellars for the fermentation and preservation of white wines.

4 Lungarotti Winery

Cantina Lungarotti, founded by Giorgio Lungarotti, is one of the most famous vineyards in Umbria. The Cantina Lungarotti, located in Torgiano, is part of the business and is known for the production of fine wines, including Rubesco and  San Giorgio. By the cellar you can visit the Moo Olive oil and Muvit Wine museum.

5 Roccafiore Winery 

Cantina Roccafiore is located in Todi and was founded by Leonardo Baccarelli, a famous petroleum products businessman. The vineyard focuses on organic and bio-dynamic wines, in addition to offering catering services. 

6 Tenuta Bellafonte 

Tenuta Bellafonte, in Montecchio, is part of the Falesco vineyard. Falesco was founded by famous oenologists Renzo Cotarella and Riccardo Cotarella: two of the greatest authorities on Italian wine. Falesco produces some of the best Merlot, Cabernet, Sangiovese and Roscetto in Italy.

7 Tenuta di Salviano of the Fendi family 

Tenuta di Salviano, situated in Titignano, is owned by the Marquis Giovanni Incisa della Rocchetta, also owner of the Bolgheri Tenuta San Guido, winery which also produces the famous Sassicaia. The cellar produces high quality wines, including Salviano Orvieto Classico and Lago di Corbara Rosso.

8 Cantina Di Filippo

This family-run cellar is located in the hills of Todi and specialises in the production of organic wines. Guided tours take you on the discovery of production techniques, exploring the cellars and tasting a selection of their wines, such as Grechetto and Sagrantino.

9 Cantina Perticaia

Perticaia is a renowned cellar of Montefalco that specialises in the production of quality wines, especially Sagrantino di Montefalco. Visits to the winery include a walk through the vineyards, a visit to the cellars and a tasting of their award-winning wines.

10 Adanti Cellar

Adanti, in Bevagna, is a traditional cellar with a long history in winemaking. Guided tours take you deep into the world of Umbrian vineyards, with the opportunity to taste their wines, including the famous Sagrantino di Montefalco.
